Erdogan Urges Lasting Peace in Syria

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday appealed for calm and reconciliation in Syria, encouraging all factions to place national cohesion first and refrain from steps that might undermine hopes for enduring stability.

“Our greatest wish for Syria is to achieve stability and peace; we want Syrians to build their future together in unity,” Erdogan said while addressing a Justice and Development (AK) Party parliamentary group session in Ankara.

He further underscored the importance of collaboration among Syria’s varied ethnic and religious groups following years of turmoil. Pointing out that the framework for a durable agreement is gradually taking shape, he warned stakeholders not to fall back into previous errors.

“The roadmap for lasting peace in Syria has been set; parties must avoid miscalculations, repeating past mistakes, or poisoning the process with maximalist demands,” said Erdogan.

Drawing attention to the devastating human toll of the conflict, Erdogan remarked: “Every drop of blood shed breaks our hearts, regardless of whether it is Arab, Turkmen, Kurd, or Nusayri; every life lost in Syria feels like losing a part of ourselves.”

He also advocated pivoting toward rebuilding efforts and financial revitalization. “It is time for Syria’s resources and above- and below-ground wealth to be used for the prosperity of all sectors of society, not for digging tunnels under cities,” he said.

Touching on broader regional issues, Erdogan dismissed accusations that Türkiye aims to assert control, stating: “Türkiye is not seeking influence in the region and has no desire to shape other countries; on the contrary, we sincerely seek fellowship.”
