DEIK Pushes for Turkey-EU Membership, Customs Union Updates
The letter, drafted by DEIK through the Türkiye-Europe Business Councils, was signed by presidents of business councils from 26 EU member states and addressed to EU authorities. A press event in Istanbul on Friday, titled Türkiye-EU: From Dialogue to Action – An Open Letter to EU Leaders, accompanied the publication of the letter.
DEIK President Nail Olpak said at the meeting that the entire DEIK organization supports the initiative, highlighting the delays experienced in Türkiye’s EU membership process and the modernization of the Customs Union. “Türkiye and the EU maintain close relations despite all negativities,” Olpak said, emphasizing that the agenda extends beyond updating the Customs Union to their aspiration to be fully integrated into the European ecosystem.
He also noted that the world is experiencing a period of global unpredictability. Highlighting challenges such as visa issues and the EU’s new Carbon Border Adjustment mechanism, Olpak called for modernization of the Customs Union. He further warned that EU free trade agreements with countries outside the Customs Union, including those with South American Mercosur members and India, also affect Türkiye.
Olpak added that in discussions with various European nations, many expressed agreement with Türkiye’s perspective.
