UK, Turkey to finalize agreement on exporting Typhoon fighter jets
According to reports, the UK Ministry of Defence announced that the multibillion-pound agreement concerning the delivery of Typhoon aircraft to Türkiye is now significantly closer to reality. The newly signed MoU is also expected to deepen defense cooperation between the two countries.
The document was signed by Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler and UK Defense Secretary John Healey during the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF), where Türkiye was formally recognized as a prospective operator of the Eurofighter Typhoon.
As stated by officials, the agreement not only enhances the UK-Türkiye bilateral relationship but also contributes to NATO’s broader deterrence efforts. It builds on years of collaboration and increasingly strong industrial links between the two nations.
"Negotiations on the potential deal with Türkiye will now continue over the coming weeks," the statement noted, pointing out that this would be the UK's first Typhoon export deal since 2017.
"Signing a multi-billion export deal with Türkiye ... will bolster our vital defence industry, deliver on our Plan for Change and keep us and our allies safer during these uncertain times," said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Healey echoed the importance of the deal, stating: "Equipping Türkiye with Typhoons would strengthen NATO’s collective defence, and boost both our countries’ industrial bases by securing thousands of skilled jobs across the UK for years to come."
Charles Woodburn, chief executive of BAE Systems, emphasized the broader strategic significance, saying: "This Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Türkiye and the UK underscores the importance of their long-standing defence co-operation through NATO and the critical role Typhoon plays in security and defence in Europe and the Middle East."
